Between the bars

Here's a great cover of Elliott Smith's song, "Between the Bars", by Madeleine Peyroux. I had no idea about this cover, until this morning, when my good friend Dimitris Geronikolas sent it to me. His kind gesture made me want to drink some booze, smoke a pack and play some ballads with some of my best friends (Dimitris, Dimitris, Stelios). Till Sunday... Enjoy...

Rhyme and Reason

Yesterday, I watched a great movie called "Rhyme & Reason". A movie about the history of hip-hop made up from interviews with a dream-team of mcs, producers etc. And the best thing is, that I watched the whole thing in youtube. In 10 parts. Enjoy...

White Denim

I discovered White Denim last year. Since then, they have been one of my favorite bands. Great songs, great attitude, live performances, that remind me  of the good old days, when bands used to actually play and kick-ass music videos. Enjoy...

Ps. Listen to all the tracks, or else I'll hunt you down.

Who sampled whom No.8

I believe that there is no one out there that hasn't seen the Alfred Hitchcock classic "Psycho" and listened to Bernard Herrmann's classic theme. But, the thing is, that I don't know if all these people realize, that they have heard this theme elsewhere too. Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Bernard Hermann - Prelude (Psycho theme)

Busta Rhymes - Gimme Some More

Ps. Most of Busta's music videos are masterpieces. Busta is a semi-god.

That's what I call a drum solo No.3

Herlin Riley is a not so well known neo-bop drummer. He has played with Ahmad Jamal, Wynton Marsalis, George Benson and many more. He is also a master of the New Orleans second line drumming style. He is the real thing. Really traditional. Enjoy...

Ps. The videos also feature a young Nicholas Payton on the trumpet.

Jack Wilkins - Red Clay

That's the Scenario

So Q-Tip plays a gig at the Knitting Factory.  At some point he decides to play the Tribe Called Quest classic "Scenario". He has a big surprise for his audience. A really big surprise. Check out what happens. That's real hip-hop by the way. Two of the biggest figures of hip-hop showing how it should be done.  Play it loud and enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Ps1. By the way here's the original, as featured in Tribe Called Quest's landmark album, "The Low End Theory ".

Ps2. Holy shit... Look and listen at the crowd.

Beef

Studying my blog's statistics has helped me come to an interesting conclusion. People don't like hip-hop. And when I'm using the word hip-hop, I'm not referring to the music, that chicks dance to at hip parties in order to get laid with worthless basketball players, who think they're thugs. I'm talking about what I call real hip-hop. If Lil Wayne is new school, then I'm totally old school. I'm talking about hip-hop that grooves, has bone-breaking rhymes and makes you wanna blast your stereo.

I decided, that I'm going to continue to feature posts about hip-hop, because I have a true and genuine love for it.

Yesterday, I watched a documentary called Beef. It's a documentary about beefs between famous mcs. Starting from the Busy Bee vs. Kool Moe Dee beef, that started it all, and finishing with the 50cent vs. Jarule beef. I really enjoyed this movie. Here's the trailer. Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Ps. This post is dedicated to my good friend Orestis Falireas, with whom I share the same genuine love and childish enthusiasm about hip-hop.

Listening to John Paul Jones's solo records certainly helps you understand in which way he contributed to Led Zeppelin and Them Crooked Vultures. Don't you ever forget that John Paul Jones wrote "No Quarter". Enjoy...

Bouzouki

Yesterday, I stumbled upon the following video. Stateless's latest single "Ariel". I don't really like this band, but if you're Greek you will certainly understand why I decided to post it. It's a dubstep - tsifteteli, with some airy Thom Yorke meets Justin Timberlake type of vocals.

This video also inspired me to present to you some international tracks, which feature bouzouki samples. Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Ps. I think that this track also features a bouzouki sample, but I'm not so sure.

Ps. Dedicated to my good friend Byron, who shares the same love that I do for Tallest man on earth's first album.

The making of a live show

I really don't like Jonsi's solo music, but I find the following videos really interesting. There are 4 parts of them. It's the making of his live show. Graphics, animation, light installations, props etc. Check it out. Really clever ideas and construction. Enjoy...

Who sampled whom No.4

John Abercrombie is a great guitarist and composer. Throughout the years he has offered some landmark-recordings to us humble people, like "Timeless", "Gateway" and many more. That's one of the main reasons he has been sampled so much. The second explanation I can offer to you is  that people probably smoked too much, when listening to his albums. Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Slum Village - Reunion (produced by black milk)

John Abercrombie - Timeless (samples appears at 9:18, but listen to the whole track)

Cinematic Orchestra - Durian

John Abercrombie - Sorcery No.1 ( first sample appears at 1:16, second sample appears at 7:13)

Song of Midnight No.4

As i was driving back from today's gig, I was actually thinking of something really basic. Have you ever really, but really wondered how unexplainable and fascinating is the fact that music, a sequence of notes, provokes certain emotions? I feel dumb... Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

I wish I could do that sometimes. Enjoy...

Balinese Monkey Chant

That's what I call a drum solo No.2

Glenn Kotche is the drummer for the American band Wilco. He is also a solo artist and composer. Monkey chants originate from Bali. Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Ps. This solo is a soundtrack he made for a fairy tale.

Paul Motian's favorite drummer

Paul Motian is a historical figure of the drums. He briefly played with Thelonious Monk and then he joined the Bill Evans trio. Since then he has played with Keith Jarett, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell and many more.

In his personal project, the "Electric Bebop Band", he doesn't make use of the piano. Instead he uses many saxophone players and guitarists simultaneously. Some of the musicians he has used are Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Chris Cheek, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Brad Shepik, Ben Monder, Jakob Bro and Steve Cardenas. For those who haven't studied the modern jazz scene, these players are bound to play at the jazz all-star game.

But most of all, Paul Motian is such a cool guy. Watch the following video and you'll know what I mean. Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Ps. This post is dedicated to my good friend Minas. When we were in school, Minas bought me a Paul Motian record for my birthday, but when he gave it to me, he had already opened it.

Who sampled whom No.3

Do yourself a favor and watch the following movie. It's called  "Network" and was directed by Sidney Lumet. If you don't know who Sidney Lumet is, you have a real f****** problem. Watch the following snippet and bear in mind, that it was shot in 1976. Enjoy...

Man on Wire

I just stumbled upon this picture. It shows two technicians fixing an antenna on the Empire state building.

It's a hard job, but somebody has to do it. The post that featured this photo, also featured the following video.

Watching this video reminded me of a great movie-documentary called "Man on Wire". Here's the official trailer.

You should definitely watch it. It's breath-taking. Enjoy...

Yours, Serafeim

Ps. This post is dedicated to my friends Jay Vee and Beoll, who are totally going to throw up, when they watch the videos.

Who sampled whom No.2

"The Score" by the Fugees was initially released in 1996. I was twelve at the time. I went with my mother at the record store and bought it, along with Body Count's "Body Count". The whole album is sample based, but my favorite sample is the following. Enjoy...
